Field Instruction Challenges Students to Be Prepared

Students will soon be experiencing solo camping overnights on our Lowenwood campus and Exploration Week trips in the Boundary Waters and the Porcupine Mountains, so Field Instruction has been focusing on all the skills necessary for students to feel confident and comfortable while participating in these activities. On Thursday and Friday in Field Instruction class, Field Instructors Dylan Fernandez and Eve Smallwood reviewed with students how to select and prepare a site for a tent, how to plan a route for a camping and/or canoeing trip, how to dig a firepit, and how to dispose properly of human waste, all while following Leave No Trace principles. In the accompanying photos, you can see Dylan and Eve leading students through discussions and activities in and around the Lowenwood Recreation Center (LRC).
