Conserve School CS2 Off and Running!

At dinner last night, Math Teacher Kathy Jones and new student Sam share a laugh at the entree counter while other students wait for their turn.

Our new CS2 students are busy learning one another’s names, learning their way around campus, learning the Conserve School acronyms (LAB, LRC, TC …), and just generally learning the ropes as they jump from one orientation activity to another. So far they’ve experienced house meetings (which they’ll have once a week from now on), a Lowenstine Academic Building tour (where they stopped to visit with each of their teachers in their respective classrooms), and a tour of the campus grounds and buildings (with a stop at the sledding hill followed by cookies and hot chocolate at staff members’ apartments). As I’m writing this, student groups are rotating through a series of orientation sessions on school procedures — for example, when and how to touch base with staff members at “hard check-in” times, those times during the day when we do complete head counts to make sure every student is accounted for.

Tomorrow morning we’ll administer the NWEA MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test, a requirement for accreditation and a data point that helps us understand the general characteristics of each group of semester students. These test results are not reported to parents, students, or any other schools or agencies; we collect them for our own internal use at the beginning and end of each semester and use them along with a variety of other data to help us plan, evaluate, and improve our program.

Each student will take the test on his or her laptop. Afterwards, students will rotate through additional orientation sessions, including training on laptop use and training on campus chores like setting tables and washing dishes.  Technology training will continue on weekday evenings later this week.

The accompanying photos show dinner last night and groups of students visiting my apartment today as part of their campus tour. (See my Conserve School website for more photos of student groups visiting my apartment.)

That’s all for now. Students and staff members have been busy taking pictures yesterday and today, so keep an eye on this blog for more photos soon.

  1. I am so amazed by your school and I’m excited to watch our grand son Koty during his stay there. Such a wonderful experience for these young people or anyone for that matter! We could all stand to learn these things. 🙂
Thank you for maintaining this connection with us!

  2. Thanks for the update and great photos! Keep them coming.
