The Compost Pile Wakes Up for Spring

Student Casey and Graduate Fellow Bennett transport food waste to the compost pile.

The Conserve School Sustainability Campus Service Team members haul food waste to the compost pile each day, even through the winter. So far our pile isn’t large enough to generate enough heat to stay active through the winter, so in the winter, the food waste just freezes. Then when spring temperatures rise, the frozen mass of food waste thaws: yuck! Here is a series of photos that shows Graduate Fellow Bennett Rock and student Casey getting the composting process rolling again.

Casey takes the temperature of one of the compost piles.

Casey tips food waste from the dining hall into the compost.

Casey tosses in straw as Bennett forks it into the mix.
