Fire Specialist Kelly Close speaks to students on the topic of forest fires in Yellowstone National Park.

Kelly Close, a fire behavior analyst from Colorado, made a presentation to students during Exploration Week on wildland fire behavior.  Mr. Close has worked at fires including the Yosemite fires of 1988 and, most recently, the Station Fire in California last year and is also a fire department captain in Fort Collins, Colorado.  His presentation addressed the many variables influencing wildland fires, including historical events that have reshaped the United States’ approach to managing fires.  His talk covered several well-known historical fires, from the Peshtigo Fire of 1871 to the wildfires last year in California.
