On Tuesday, March 23, Conserve School students and staff as well as community members gathered to attend our Haiti Benefit. Our goal was to raise awareness and funds for those affected by the recent Haiti earthquake in the town of Fond Jean Noel, Haiti, and specifically to fix the town’s only vehicle. It was quite an evening, with a traditional Haitian meal of red beans and rice, stewed pork, and a salad followed by a presentation by Dr. Peter “Painless Pete’ Schindelholz and three other community members, Dan Benson, Norm Messen, and Kathy Johnson, who have all gone to Fond Jean Noel, Haiti, on dental missions. They spoke about the work they have done in the past, the work they would like to

do in the future, and their experiences while they were in Haiti during the recent earthquake. Overall the evening was a great success. We even had Alex from News Channel 12 out of Rhinelander come and cover the event! She interviewed staff members as well as students Shay Gallagher and Casey Murphy, both of whom volunteered for the event. There were 127 people total in attendance, of which 64 came from outside of Conserve.

So now the big question: How much did we raise? Together we were able to raise $1,730.40 for Fond Jean Noel! Wow!

There are a lot of people to thank for making this event such a success. Pete, Norm, Dan, and Kathy were great for agreeing to come and speak to us about their experiences. The work they are doing is phenomenal! And this event couldn’t have happened without help from both Conserve School students and staff. Staff

members were instrumental in helping organize and advertise the event. Some of the girls from Badger Wing (where this idea originated) helped with advertising as well, designing posters and putting them up around town. They also helped design the programs for the event. Then both these girls and the Robotics Team volunteered to greet attendees at the door, staff the information/donation table, hand out programs, take photographs, and run the audiovisual equipment. The Sodexo Dining Services staff members created a delicious meal. And of course, last but not least, thank you to everyone who attended the event and made donations!
