Conserve School Robotics Team Wins Second Prestigious Inspire Award

Jaclyn gives the thumbs up as Andy and William concentrate on the robot.

At the Wisconsin FTC Robotics Championship, our team again distinguished themselves, placing high in the competitive rounds. More importantly, just as in the Illinois Championship, our students received special recognition for their excellent team spirit and professionalism by winning the highest FTC honor, the “Inspire Award.”  Judges were especially impressed that Conserve School team members went out of their way to help a new and inexperienced team, even though doing so made it less likely that they themselves would score as high as possible in the competitive rounds. Congratulations to our team for their hard work and their thoughtfulness in reaching out to a less experienced team.

Here is Robotics Coach Robert Eady’s description of the event:

The Robotics students won the Inspire Award again, the most prestigious award at the event. The judges were very impressed. Something that I think was especially generous of the team: they went in to the semi-final rounds of the competition as the number 2 seeded team. In the order of seeding, teams choose their alliance partners for the final rounds of the competition. Since the captain of the winning alliance team wins the opportunity to attend the world competition, generally the teams choose the strongest competitors for their partners, and there is, of course, the prestige and satisfaction that comes from winning the event. Our team decided to select one of the youngest teams that hadn’t been a particularly strong competitor during the qualification rounds, so that these students could have the chance to participate in the excitement of the final rounds, gain the experience, and have a chance at being invited to the world event. This is not something that you see too often, even at an event like the FIRST competitions that place a very heavy emphasis on “gracious professionalism”. Their decision and action sure made my day.

The FTC website describes the Inspire Award in the following way:

The Inspire Award is the most prestigious FTC award, and is given to the team that truly embodies the ‘challenge’ of the FTC program.  The team that receives this award is chosen by the judges as having best represented a role model FIRST Tech Challenge Team.  The team that receives this award is a top contender for all other judging categories and is a strong competitor on the field. Judges use match performance, observations made during interviews and in the pit area, and the team’s Engineering Notebook as equal factors in determining the winner of this award.
