Putting the Bees to Bed for the Winter

On Wednesday during Community Service Time, the Sustainability Campus Service Team moved the bee hives into the garden shed for the winter. The northern Wisconsin winters here are too cold for the bees, and we have been experimenting with different methods to protect them so that they survive through the winter. Last year we tried stacking bales of hay around them and covering the hives and the haybales with a tarp. While this method kept the bees warm enough, it did not provide enough ventilation and the bees succumbed to a fungal disease. We are hoping that keeping the bees in the shed and opening the shed up on warm(ish) days will give the bees both the protection and the ventilation they need.

You can see below the steps the Sustainability Team members took to move the hives, a delicate business.
