Great Moments from Exploration Week

I’ve asked students and staff members to send me descriptions of some of their best moments during Exploration Week. Here is our first contribution, from Michael Salat. Thank you for sharing, Michael!  -Mary Anna

Bull Moose Bay

The time was 7:30 AM and it was time to retrieve the food sack which was hanging from two trees about 30 yards from camp.  As I started down the trail I heard a “splash” and thought it might be the mergansers that had visited our camp the previous evening.  But mergansers they were not, as I saw the antlers of a large bull moose just above the waterline.  The moose quietly swam across our bay and he gave me a chance to turn towards our camp and say, “If you are awake, we have a moose out here”.  Luckily most of the crew heard my message and crawled out of their tents to witness this incredible sight.  Our friend the moose posed on the far side of the bay to give Dick a great opportunity to snap this photo.  The moose sighting in “Bull Moose Bay” will go down as one of the best memories of a fantastic week.
